The 33 prints revealed for sale in Paris depict Francis Giacobetti’s photography as a vehicle for fantastic life encounters. Bidders can imagine themselves in the photographer’s airplane jetting off around the world to shoot beautiful Jane Fonda, Rachel Welch and Jane Birkin for magazine covers, as well as 170 talented men and women from the 20ths and 21st century.

As the issues of the Lui Magazine hit newsstands, Giacobetti gradually becomes the Pope of the Glamour Shot. Jean-Paul Goude, advertising film director, illustrates in words the Giacobetti woman:

She is tanned, covered in sand, on a beach, photographed with men in mind, like a golden goddess. She could be a Duchesse or a baker’s girl. We don’t know. A woman is a woman. Her femininity is highlighted; her beauty is taken out of all other context“.

The photographer confesses: “Nude is undoubtedly the hardest art form. I did not choose it, it was instinctive.”

Defining himself as “a thief and a liar” who steals faces, transforming them to the extent that “a mother seldom recognises her own child“, Giacobetti arrives in his latest works at photographing his models’ pupil as the unique window into the soul.

Using an ophthalmological camera of his own craft, he creates the pupil diptychs with Francis Bacon, Dalai Lama, César, Fidel Castro and Luciano Pavarotti.
